A wonderful experience had by the kids in Room 4, watching, smelling, listening, hearing and tasting the Hangi recently held at the school. Please enjoy some of the children’s thoughts as they wrote about their own experiences.
We heard the wood going crackle and crickle. It was funny listening to the sounds and then after a while the wood started to fall and fall and then some of the wood went down into the big hole with a CRASH!

I saw smoke floating in the air. The smoke got in the people’s eyes and I saw logs crashing on the ground and when the logs got to the ground the rocks go down.
I smelt smoke everywhere and I smelt fire. I smelt wood burning. It smelt stinky!
When the logs fell it went CRASH ! BANG! And down the logs go and the little bits of logs went SNAP! CRACK!

I saw the fire’s huge flames. I smelt the grey smoke from the fire.I heard the fire POP!
I liked the Hangi because it was YUM!

The Hangi is hot and it made my throat sore.
I saw smoke and I saw a lot of food and I saw the men.I smelt the smoke. My ears heard the CRACKLING from the wood.

I saw the six logs falling in the hole. I smelt smoke because it was YUCK! I heard the the fire burning and the flames were making a FIZZING sound.

I saw smoke going out of the Hangi. The food was cooking in the Hangi. I smelt YUCKY smoke. The smoke was coming out of the ground dirt. I heard CRASHING and CLICKING coming out of the Hangi fire.I felt hot. My eyes were watery! I was very hot! I got very very hot. I was burning!

The Hangi was very hot in your face. The fire got hotter and hotter and then a very loud noise CRACKED! I saw the wood cracked down into the hole. I smelt the smoke coming to me and all of the other kids too. I heard popping and popping and POP! My hands were hot and my face was hot too.

The logs were criss cross like weaving, the logs were black, the logs were falling into parts. The Hangi was covered with sand. The smoke was stinky and bad. It was yuck smoke and it looks like a burnt home. My ears heard a BOOM and another BOOM!
My hand were excited to eat the Hangi. My hands were sweating. My hands were hot wet hands. Then people were going crazy.
